How to Use a Disposable Vape: A Step-by-Step Guide
For adults 21+ only. Smokey Cloudz sells only to adults of legal age. See our Age Policy and Sales Restrictions. Vapes contain nicotine. Nicotine is an addictive chemical.
Quick answer: To use a disposable vape, take it out of the box, remove any seals or stickers, and inhale gently through the mouthpiece. Most disposables fire automatically when you draw, with no button. If your device has a screen or modes, check the battery and e-liquid levels and start in the standard mode. Charge it over USB-C when the battery runs low, and replace it when the liquid is used up.

This guide is for adults 21+ who are new to disposables or switching to a newer device with a screen, modes or a pod. It covers the basics that apply to most devices, then the specific features on the models we stock. Always follow the instructions printed on your device’s packaging, since controls vary by model.
How do you use a disposable vape for the first time?
- Check the box. Make sure the packaging and seal are intact. If the device looks opened or damaged, don’t use it and contact the seller.
- Remove seals and stickers. Many devices have a silicone plug or sticker on the mouthpiece and sometimes on the bottom airflow. Take all of them off, or the device may not fire.
- Check the screen. If your device has a display, it usually shows battery and e-liquid levels. If the battery reads low, charge it first.
- Choose the standard mode if your device has modes. It has the highest puff rating and the smoothest hit.
- Inhale gently. Take a slow, steady draw for a couple of seconds. Most disposables are draw-activated, meaning the sensor fires when you inhale.
- Rest between puffs. Leaving a short gap lets the wick soak up e-liquid and keeps the flavor consistent.
Are you supposed to inhale a vape?
Yes. A disposable vape is draw-activated, so it only fires when you inhale through the mouthpiece. Most disposables have a tight draw built for a slow, two-step puff:
- Draw into your mouth. Take a slow, steady pull for two to three seconds, like sipping through a straw.
- Then breathe in. Pause briefly and breathe the vapor in, then exhale.
A short, gentle draw activates the sensor more reliably than a hard pull. Pulling too hard can flood the coil and give a weak or burnt hit. If nothing happens when you inhale, check for a leftover seal, a low battery or a locked device, then see why is my vape lighting up but not hitting.
New to a pod kit like the Foger Switch Pro? The draw works the same way: the pod fires when you inhale. Battery runs out fast? See how to charge a vape, or grab a spare Foger Switch Pro 850mAh battery.
Do disposable vapes have a button?
Most don’t. A sealed disposable usually has an airflow sensor that switches it on when you draw. Some newer devices add buttons or sliders for extra features, such as switching modes, adjusting airflow or locking the device. If your device has a lock feature, our how to unlock a Geek vape guide explains that step for Geek Bar devices.
What do the modes on a disposable vape mean?
Many current disposables have two or three power modes. A higher mode gives a stronger hit but uses e-liquid and battery faster, which is why its puff rating is lower. Here is how the modes compare on devices we stock, using the ratings from our product pages:
| Device | Standard mode | Higher mode(s) |
|---|---|---|
| Geek Bar Pulse X 25K | Regular: up to 25,000 puffs | Pulse: up to 15,000 |
| Geek Bar Pulse 15000 | Regular: up to 15,000 puffs | Pulse: up to 7,500 |
| RAZ LTX 25K | Normal (12 W): up to 25,000 puffs | Boost (24 W) |
| RAZ RX 50K | Normal: up to 50,000 puffs | Boost: 25,000 · Super Boost: 20,000 |
| Geek Bar Clio Platinum 50K | Regular: up to 50,000 puffs | Pulse: 25,000 · Super Pulse: 20,000 |
Puff counts are manufacturer ratings. Real use depends on puff length, mode and how you charge the device. For more detail on how long each device lasts, see what disposable vape lasts the longest.
How do you charge a disposable vape?
Most rechargeable disposables we stock charge through a USB-C port, including the Geek Bar Pulse X, RAZ LTX and Foger Bit. Plug in a USB-C cable, let the device charge until the screen or light shows full, and unplug it. Avoid leaving it plugged in for long periods, and don’t charge a device that is wet or damaged.
Charging only refills the battery. It doesn’t add e-liquid. If the battery is full and the device still won’t produce vapor, the liquid may be used up. See how long does a vape battery last for how to tell the two apart.
How do you use a pod kit?
Pod kits work the same way once they’re assembled. You get a reusable device or power bank and a pre-filled pod that clicks on top. When the pod runs out, you replace the pod and keep the device.
- Remove any seals from the pod.
- Click the pod onto the device until it seats firmly.
- Check the screen to confirm the device recognizes the pod.
- Inhale gently through the pod’s mouthpiece.
- Charge the device over USB-C when the battery runs low.
Kits we stock include the RAZ Vue 50K kit, the Geek Bar Mate 60K Kit and the Foger Switch Pro. For step-by-step help with that last one, see how to use a Foger Switch Pro. Pods only fit their own system, so check the pod compatibility guide before ordering refills.

Why isn’t my new disposable vape working?
- A seal is still on. Check the mouthpiece and the bottom for plugs or stickers.
- The battery is low. Charge it over USB-C and try again.
- The device is locked. Some models have a lock feature. Check the packaging.
- You’re drawing too hard or too softly. Try a slow, steady draw.
If it lights up but doesn’t hit, see why is my vape lighting up but not hitting. If it tastes burnt, see why a disposable vape tastes burnt.
How do you know when a disposable vape is empty?
On devices with a screen, the e-liquid gauge drops toward empty. Without a screen, the signs are weaker flavor, less vapor, or a burnt taste even with a full battery. When that happens, the device is done. Sealed disposables can’t be refilled.

FAQ
How do you use a vape pen?
For a disposable, remove any seals, then inhale gently through the mouthpiece. Most fire automatically when you draw. Charge it over USB-C when the battery runs low.
How do you hit a disposable vape?
Take a slow, steady draw for a couple of seconds and leave a short gap between puffs. Starting in the standard mode gives the smoothest hit.
Do you need to charge a new disposable vape before using it?
Not always. Check the battery level on the screen. If it reads low or the device won’t fire, charge it over USB-C first.
Which mode should I use on my vape?
Start with the standard mode, such as Regular or Normal. Higher modes like Pulse or Boost hit harder but use e-liquid faster, so their puff ratings are lower.
Can you refill a disposable vape?
No. Disposables are sealed and designed to be replaced. If you want to keep the device and swap only the liquid, choose a pod kit and replace the pod.
Do you inhale a vape or just hold it in your mouth?
You inhale. Draw the vapor into your mouth slowly for a couple of seconds, then breathe it in and exhale. Disposables only fire while you are drawing, so there is no need to hold the vapor.
Why does my vape only work when I inhale hard?
A weak or blocked airflow sensor, a low battery or condensation in the mouthpiece can make it need a harder pull. Charge it, blow gently through the mouthpiece to clear it, and try a slow, steady draw.
Where can I find instructions for my specific vape?
Each model works a little differently. We have step-by-step guides for the Geek Bar Pulse 2, Pulse X, Pulse X2 and Mate, the RAZ LTX and Vue, and the Foger Switch Pro. See the model-specific how-to guides section above.
